I have spent the majority of my 50 years yo-yo dieting. I have tried everything from fasting to the grapefruit diet to using the now banned over the counter drug Ephedra. All of the diets were effective in making the numbers on the scale drop. They were also effective at screwing up my metabolism, lowering it to the point that when I began eating normally, I gained the weight back...plus some.
It is very easy to tell yourself that you are losing weight successfully when you weight 5 pounds less at the end of just 1 day. But it is a false mindset. When I would go for days fasting, ingesting nothing but water, it was easy to believe the 5 pounds lost in 1 day was fat. But it wasn't. Most of the loss was water loss. As soon as I ate 1 regular meal, the 5 pounds was back. Discouragement would set in and ultimately I would binge, feeling like a total failure.
