Bob Greene and the Best Life Diet
How the Best Life Diet Benefits My Life
Bob Greene, Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer, the man who will be featured on Oprah on Tuesday March 4, is the creator of the "Best Life Diet." "The Best Life Diet" emphasizes the importance of routine exercise regimens Bob Greene and the Best Life DietDate: March 4, 2008 and making wise food choices. There aren't many good or bad foods. Instead, the guidelines say eat when hungry and stop when satisfied. Bob Greene encourages people to avoid emotional eating. The program emphasizes the importance of understanding how to make healthy food choices and how to incorporate routine exercise into your daily life. "Best Life Diet" is more of a lifestyle than it is a diet. Its a long term solution to weight issues.Dieting...This verb has become a proverbial knife in my vocabulary. I have learned to hate diets with a passion I never thought possible. Although Americans, particularly young women, seem to be obsessed with food deprivation techniques, living each and every waking moment crusading for weight loss is not the most enjoyable life. Take my word for it, I know the life of a dieter, for I too used to live from diet to diet, trying a new bizarre claim when the previous one failed. (Lose weight eating paper!) My metabolism used to be able to handle anything I devoured. All night pizza binges and the morning lattes from Starbucks used to have nothing on me. My body simply metabolized the extra calories away. Suddenly, my metabolism slowed, and I was caught off guard. Instead of maintaining a trim, sleek figure, my waistline began to expand, my pants grew tighter, and I could no longer move as well. After a few months of this disturbing trend, I decided I aught to do something about it.

Moving Toward My Best Life, Bob Greene Style
Diet Philosophy that Reshapes Mind and Body
Finally. A common sense approach to weight-loss and body management brought to us by Bob Greene, author of The Best-Life Diet. Instead of sweeping changes that promise to revamp a dieter's body from tip to toe, Greene encourages the mastery of simple, doable, Moving Toward My Best Life, Bob Greene Style and very, very small changes to food choices, habits, and movement patterns. The basic philosophy behind the diet plan is to identify a few small tweaks each month, master them, and then move on to the next set of minor adjustments. In all honesty, I can't say that I am one of those women who has tried everything to lose weight. I've never attempted anything like a grapefruit diet or a chicken soup diet or anything that relied heavily on any single food group.
I have, however, attempted to cut certain food groups out of my diet in the past, with little or no effect. In the late 90's, when I first started struggling with my weight, I tried to eat little or no fat throughout the day. I kept a food journal, and my goal was to eat less than 10 grams of fat on any given day. Ridiculous, I now know. Our bodies need quite a bit more fat than that just to feel satisfied. If we don't get that, I've learned, we're likely to binge later because our bodies are going to believe they are hungry. I still try not to over-do the fats, but I'm not hyper-focused on that one nutritional category. Best-Life philosophy: Work certain unhealthy-fat foods out of your diet, including trans fats, fried foods, and high dairy fats.

How it Worked for Me: Bob Greene's the Best Life Diet
Bob Greene's The Best Life Diet is not a fad diet. The word "diet" here is not used to describe deprivation. It is used to describe a new, healthy way of eating that is meant to last a lifetime. Greene's plan is divided into 3 phases. Before moving from one phase How it Worked for Me: Bob Greene's the Best Life Diet to the next, you must first be successful and comfortable with the previous phase. Greene's plan is based on taking baby steps physically and emotionally, because both are essential for effective permanent weight loss.
I have spent the majority of my 50 years yo-yo dieting. I have tried everything from fasting to the grapefruit diet to using the now banned over the counter drug Ephedra. All of the diets were effective in making the numbers on the scale drop. They were also effective at screwing up my metabolism, lowering it to the point that when I began eating normally, I gained the weight back...plus some.
It is very easy to tell yourself that you are losing weight successfully when you weight 5 pounds less at the end of just 1 day. But it is a false mindset. When I would go for days fasting, ingesting nothing but water, it was easy to believe the 5 pounds lost in 1 day was fat. But it wasn't. Most of the loss was water loss. As soon as I ate 1 regular meal, the 5 pounds was back. Discouragement would set in and ultimately I would binge, feeling like a total failure.

The Macrobiotic Diet: Long-Life Diet or Risky PseudoScience?
In examining the many fad diets that are out there with various levels of fleeting popularity, I occasionally come across one that actually makes some sense. At first glance, the Macrobiotic Diet looks like one of these. The word macrobiotic comes from the Greek The Macrobiotic Diet: Long-Life Diet or Risky PseudoScience? words for long life and is supposedly based on the traditional diets of some of the world's longest lived peoples. Now don't get me wrong, Macrobiotics pioneer, George Ohsawa, makes some claims that are wrong-headed. He suggests that smoking tobacco is good for the lungs, for example. I certainly don't believe that or recommend that anyone smoke anything. Clean air is good for the lungs without a doubt, and there is no need to take chances beyond that.
Health Risks of the Macrobiotic Diet
The Macrobiotic Diet does have some serious shortcomings for the average person. Without careful planning of your diet, it is possible, even likely that you may become seriously deficient in some important and life-sustaining nutrients. Earlier forms of the Macrobiotic Diet, especially the version proposed by Ohsawa in his book Zen Macrobiotics, had several stages that ultimately led one to a diet consisting entirely of grains. It is virtually impossible to get proper nutrition on a grain only diet, and there were reports of practitioners contracting diseases such as scurvy (since the diet eschewed fruits), and even dying of malnutrition.

5 Easy Ways to Get More Fiber in Your Diet
The thought of eating more fiber often conjures up images of drinking thick, grainy fiber rich liquids or eating nothing but raw vegetables...but it doesn't have to be this way.
It is true that fiber is a very important part of a healthy diet. According to Bob Greene, author of The Best Life Diet, women should eat at least 25 g. of fiber a day, and men should eat at least 38 g. of fiber a day. Fiber helps digestion and also helps your blood sugar level stay steady. When eating lots of fiber, it is also important to drink lots of water. Water helps push the fiber through your system.
The good news is that you do not have to drink those grainy fiber drinks or take fiber pills in order to get your body's daily requirement of fiber. By making a few small changes in your diet, you will get what you need and it will seem almost effortless.

Why Bob Greene's the Best Life Diet is Unhealthy and Expensive, Even If Oprah Says Differently
Bob Greene's the Best Life Diet Promotes Eating Packaged and Processed Famous Brand Foods
The other night, I watched an Oprah show in which she was talking to Bob Greene about his The Best Life Diet. Now, first of all, I have to say I live in Asia so I have no idea when this Oprah show was filmed but, obviously, it was quite a while ago as Oprah was thin. I'd never heard of The Best Life Diet so I was interested to watch the show further. But, with recent news saying Oprah has ballooned to more than 200 lbs, I would have to venture a guess that she hasn't been on The Best Life Diet in quite a while, and that the Oprah show I watched was an old one. Either way, what struck me after watching the Oprah show, was how unhealthy a diet The Best Life Diet can be and how expensive Bob Greene's way of losing weight is. Why you ask? Let me explain.Bob Greene's The Best Life Diet Pushes Processed Foods - One of the scourges of the American diet is vast amounts of processed foods. Americans eat more processed foods than any other nationality in the world. They also have the highest rates of cancer, heart disease and diabetes, much of which has been linked to the consumption of processed foods. I was amazed therefore to watch Bob Greene and Oprah talk about The Best Life Diet and push an enormous amount of processed foods to the TV audience. Boxes of cereal, bottles of 'salad dressing spritzer', packets of low fat cookies, processed yoghurts, processed meat, mounds of cans of Slim-Fast (one of the most loaded with chemicals and preservatives 'foods' I've ever seen), frozen vegetables, and more. Sure, some of it was the so-called healthy food, but all of it packed with preservatives and chemicals. Now, why Bob Greene and Oprah would be pushing this food, when you can buy much healthier (and cheaper!) fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, chicken etc. is beyond me.

Bob Greene's Best Life Diet
Bob Greene's diet and healthy living tips have been hitting my inbox for well over a year. Sometimes I open them and learn a new exercise or motivational tip for healthy living. Other times when I saw Bob Greene's Best Life Now in my inbox I hit delete.
Today, Oprah talked about her struggle with weight and weight gain during 2007-2008. The approach taken by Oprah and one of her best friends and trainers, Bob Greene, is that her problem is not a weight issue, but a love issue. She has not given enough time to herself, including loving herself and taking care of herself.
The question, according to Bob Greene and Oprah, is to ask ourselves what are we hungry for? Those who struggle with weight satisfy hunger for love, acceptance, success, rest, and more with food. Food becomes the self medicating drug of choice.

Key Principles of the Bob Greene Best Life Diet
What to Expect on the Bob Greene Best Life Diet Program
Has the Bob Greene Best Life Diet piqued your curiosity? It's the latest diet being promoted by Oprah and has quickly reached the top of the Amazon.com bestsellers list. Critics of the Bob Greene Best Life Diet consider it to be another fad that will leave many people frustrated and overweight, but promoters of the book affirm that it really is the best way to lose weight in a sensible and healthy way. If you're still not convinced that the Bob Greene Best Life Diet is the best program for you, here's a brief overview of how the plan works and what to expect:Commitment to the Three Phases
Phase One lasts four weeks and involves addressing your current body weight and finding out what has caused you to reach your current state of health. Bob Greene emphasizes that focusing on diet and exercise alone isn't going to help you correct the problems that caused you to gain weight in the first place; "it's like putting a Band-Aid on a wound that needs stitches - a short-term solution that may even allow the problem to worsen" (Greene, 24).

Body for Life is the Best Summer Diet Program
The best summer diet is the diet you can continue in fall, winter and spring. Any frantic goal for short-term gains without a long-term strategy is destined to fail. So my best summer diet tip is to create a meal plan that you can incorporate as a way of life, allowing yourself a structured amount of cheat room.
I am using a diet plan for this summer that I have used in the past. The Body-For-Life program incorporates cardio workouts and strength training with a diet balanced with proteins, complex carbohydrates and some fat. You eat up to six meals per day, each containing a lean protein and a carbohydrate, and some meals including a vegetable. The Body-For-Life web site is here.
If you devote yourself to this program, you will quickly forget all the other short-term summer diet plans. I have first-hand knowledge of how Body-For-Life can transform your physique, because it has worked for me. Granted, since the birth of my daughter I have fallen off the wagon, but with summer approaching, I think the time is right to reintroduce myself to Body-For-Life.
